About ForkYeah

食粥食飯 — Hong Kong's AI-Powered Restaurant Picker

Our Mission

Solving the "What to Eat" dilemma for Hong Kong's 3.5 million workforce — one random spin at a time.

Our Story

ForkYeah was born from a frustration that every Hong Konger knows intimately: the Lunch Break Paralysis. You have 45 minutes. There are 30 restaurants within walking distance. You open the map, scroll past the same options you've seen a hundred times, consult two colleagues who each want something different, and spend 20 minutes deciding — only to end up at the place you always go.

We believed technology could do better. Not another recommendation algorithm optimised for sponsored listings, not another review aggregator buried under ads — but a genuine random decision engine powered by real-time, hyperlocal data.

ForkYeah was built by combining two things we care deeply about: AI-driven data analysis and an authentic respect for Hong Kong food culture. Hong Kong has one of the world's most diverse and dynamic dining scenes — over 16,000 licensed food premises packed into 1,106 km². From a $30 wonton noodle shop in a Sham Shui Po back alley to a Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant in Central, every meal here tells a story. Our job is to surface those stories, not bury them under algorithmic bias.

By integrating Google Places API v1 with a proprietary caching and relevance layer, ForkYeah delivers restaurant results in seconds — sorted by real proximity, real ratings, and real opening hours. No fake reviews. No pay-to-rank. Just the city's best and most honest dining data, delivered at the speed of a lunch break.

Our Respect for Hong Kong Food Culture

We are a Hong Kong product, built by people who eat here every day. We understand that a cha chaan teng is not just a restaurant — it is a cultural institution. That the ritual of ordering milk tea, a pineapple bun, and a plate of scrambled eggs on toast is as much a part of Hong Kong identity as the skyline itself.

ForkYeah's data model is designed to give equal visibility to independent local eateries alongside established chains — because a neighbourhood-run roast goose shop deserves to be discovered just as much as a listed restaurant. Our editorial blog covers authentic, first-hand dining experiences across every district, written by people who actually ate there and paid the bill themselves.

We are not a platform for paid placements. We do not accept money to rank restaurants higher. Our mission is to help Hong Kong people eat better and discover more of the extraordinary city they live in.

The Technology

ForkYeah is built on a modern, privacy-respecting tech stack:

Flutter (Web, iOS, Android) — single codebase, native performance across all platforms.
Google Places API v1 — real-time restaurant data with text search, category filtering, and photo access.
Firebase Firestore — low-latency caching layer that reduces API calls by ~80%, keeping the app fast and cost-efficient.
Firebase Auth — anonymous-first authentication that preserves your data without requiring sign-up, with optional Google account linking.
Geohash grid caching — proprietary region-key system for intelligent, location-aware data freshness management.
